Bronzes and shipwreck pieces an auction highlight

Two magnificent Japanese bronze works from the late Meiji period (1869-1912) (both sourced from a Melbourne estate) and several 17th and 18th century Chinese shipwreck cargo pieces are highlights of Philips Auctions next decorative arts sale from noon on Sunday at 47 Glenferrie Road, Malvern.

One of the Japanese bronzes is a Tokyo School example of a young girl playing with her Japanese Chin dog.

A Royal Worcester exhibition vase by John Stinton and a pair of Royal Worcester ewers by Johnson are major highlights of Christian McCann Auctions latest sale from noon Sunday at 426 Burnley Street, Richmond.

The auction also contains French Boulle furniture, including salon cabinets and tables, and Victorian mahogany and walnut furniture from a home in Fairy Street, Ivanhoe.

The Ivanhoe collection includes extension dining table, desks, display cabinets, bookcases and credenzas.

Diamond bracelet named after Hollywood western star

A diamond “Cooper” bracelet, named after Hollywood western great Gary Cooper who bought the first of this design for his wife in 1958, is expected to galvanise auction goers for Sotheby’s Australia Melbourne jewellery sale on Tuesday at Anzac House, 4 Collins Street.

Designed by one of the 20th century’s most renowned jewellery designers Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co, the bracelet comprises a series of six openwork cushion-shaped links, pave-set with round brilliant-cut diamonds.

Rare early drawings of the ill-fated explorers Burke and Wills by well-known colonial artist William McLeod are intriguing highlights of Amanda Addams Auctions latest sale from 6.30pm Monday at 344 High Street, Kew.

In 1887, McLeod, who also completed a drawing of John King – the only member of the expedition to cross the Australian continent and return to tell the tale, became joint owner and managing director of the Bulleting magazine with J.F. (Jules Francois) Archibald, founder of the Archibald Prize.
