Quality French furniture and other attractions at McCann auction

When auction goers turn up to Christian McCann Auctions forthcoming on site sale from noon Sunday December 2 at 25 Monomeath Avenue, Canterbury, they will be greeted by some of the finest quality 19th century French furniture that Australia has seen for many years, according to auctioneer Christian McCann.

“One of these is an exhibition quality breakfront kingwood vitrine with fine marquetry inlay and ormolu mounts (lot 47) and another is similar quality serpentine shaped salon cabinet with hand painted panels (lot 154),” he said.

The auction has some exquisite offerings including a museum quality pair of one-metre tall Moser glass vases (lot 60) and a rare and important 18th century Chinese Zitan side table (lot 372).

For those collectors looking for quality French and English antique porcelain, there is plenty from which to choose including a pair of French 19th century Sevres lidded vases with hand painted central panels (lot 30), Sevres jewel casket bearing the Chateau de Tulleries mark (lot 36) .

Chinese porcelain also is a strong auction feature with items such as a 19th century cabinet plate (lot 15) typical of the offerings.

Buyers will no doubt be impressed with a rare 19th century pierced jade jewel casket with 22-carat gold mounts and set with rose cut diamonds, pink sapphires and rubies (lot 160).

Clocks are another auction feature with items such as a 19th century French four pillar Verde marble salon clock (lot 169) and ormolu salon timepiece with hand painted porcelain panels (lot 236) of particular appeal.

Australian and international art is another attraction with Charles Roland, Haughton Forrest, Albert Sherman, Ernest Buckmaster and Walter Withers among the artists represented.

Sterling silver devotees have plenty of items to examine including an exceptional English ewer (lot 192 – manufactured in 1868) presented in 1885 to a Mr Anderson as third prize in the Australian hunters cup.
