Melbourne art auction a pleasing result for vendors

Deutscher and Hackett’s Melbourne May 23 Modern, Contemporary and Traditional art auction was no doubt pleasing for all vendors involved when all but four of the 30 works on offer sold mainly within or above estimates.

The highest price was obtained for Adam Cullen’s Mongolian Fighting Stallions, 2007 (lot 12) which went under the hammer for $35,000, right at the top of its estimate.

Albert Tucker’s Ibis in Flight (lot 17) streaked past its catalogue estimate to sell for $28,000 while Michael Johnson’s Italian Pink (also known as Spanish Visitor), 1988 (lot 2) didn’t quite reach its estimate figure but still brought a credible $26,000.

There were other good performers including SS Orizaba, 1996 by Tim Storrier which, at $22,000, easily eclipsed its catalogue estimate.

Another worthwhile purchase was Brett Whiteley’s Startled (Owl), 1984 (lot 13) for $13,000, while Arthur Loreiro’s Young Companions, 1884 (lot 23) sold for $15,000, despite not quite reaching its low estimate.

Lots 1 and 5 – Paul Partos’s Taurus, 1994-95 and Bill Henson’s Untitled 1998/1999/2000 – each went under the hammer for $12,000 (both below estimates) – while Aida Tomescu’s Welt I, 2005 (lot 3) Bill Hammond’s Limbo Bay II, 2001 respectively sold for $8500 and $8000.
