Swarovski crystal, sterling silver and antique clocks attract auction goers

The last of a Swarovski crystal collection that Young’s Auctions has been auctioning in recent weeks will be part of its latest sale from 9.30am Friday March 27 at 229 Camberwell Road, East Hawthorn.

According to director Ian Young, last week’s major special sale of the crystal was a sell-out and there are still about 30 quality pieces to go.

“We also have a collection of antique clocks that should interest collectors,” he said.

The auction contains sterling silver items including a monogrammed 1865 coffee pot and several cigarette cases.

Eva Breuer’s private collection of 76 paintings is among Menzies highlights for its auction from 6.30pm Thursday March 26 at Menzies Gallery 12 Todman Avenue, Kensington in Sydney.

One of Sydney’s leading art dealers until her death from cancer in 2010, the sale of her collection follows the closure of the Eva Breuer gallery, which her daughter Nicky McWilliam continued to run after her mother died, in May 2014.

Most art followers saw Eva Breuer as a luminary of the Australian art world who was respected for her enthusiasm, energy and high standard of practice.

A Hammond baby grand piano and a range of militaria will be the highlights of E.J. Ainger’s forthcoming weekly sale from 9.30am Tuesday March 24 at 433 Bridge Road, Richmond.

The militaria items include swords, knives, rifles and medals.

The auction also includes the contents of a Were Street, Brighton property, along with a wide range of English antique and 20th century furniture.

There are various retro teak dining suites, sideboards, displays and occasional pieces and a good selection of collectables and art.

French drawing of Bathurst sees auction daylight

An 1819 drawing of Bathurst by little known French midshipmen and naval draughtsman J. Alphonse Pellion (1796-1868) is one of the interesting drawcards at Leonard Joel’s fine art auction from 6.30pm Tuesday March 24 at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra.

Pellion was an officer aboard the Uraine that Louis-Claude de Freycinet commanded during a three-year scientific journey – from which the latter later authored the Atlas Historique.

On November 18, 1819 the corvette docked at Port Jackson and remained there for five weeks before sailing for France.

Landmark Australian artist's studio works go to auction

A landmark Australian artist, Elizabeth Durack was born 100 years ago this year and died in 2000. 

She was born into one of the pastoral families that opened up the Kimberley region of Western Australia during the 19th century – and was heavily influenced in her artistic development by Aboriginal cave paintings she saw as a girl and by the rituals and ceremonies of the oldest culture on earth.

Despite attending Loreto Convent and studying art at Chelsea Polytechnic in London in 1936, these influences never left her.

The major pieces of a Swarovski crystal collection that Young’s Auctions has been selling in recent weeks will be the highlight of its latest auction from 9.30am Friday March 20 at 229 Camberwell Road, East Hawthorn.

Featured are four myriad pieces (each worth $15,000-$20,000) among the 70 top line crystal sculptures.

These are Long Wang (dragon), Sabu (tiger charging), Lightning (rearing stallion) and a soaring falcon.

Other major works include a bald eagle, elephant, hummingbirds, bluejays and kingfishers.
