Established in 1878, The Australian Club is one of nine clubs founded in Melbourne during the 19th century by English settlers.

Carousel horses come galloping to auction

Two horses from an 1880s travelling carousel imported from England in the 1950s by South Australian Derek Williams will be a highlight of auctioning Steve Graham’s forthcoming auction from 10am on Sunday March 15 at 64 Urquhart Street, Woodend.

Apparently the carousel (complete with original steam engine) was dismantled for the journey from England and, once here, Derek and his associates had trouble re-assembling it.

They eventually found someone who had worked on travelling carousels but, because he had a criminal record, Derek refused to employ him.

Swarovski crystal continues to excite auction goers

More Austrian Swarovski crystal is being auctioned at Young’s Auctions from 9.30am Friday March 13 at 229 Camberwell Road, East Hawthorn – prior to the best parts of the collection up for grabs next week.

Headquartered in Wattens, Austria, the company was established in 1892 by Czech-born Daniel Swarovski (formerly Swartz) who died in 1956.

The Swarovski crystal range includes crystal glass sculptures and miniatures, jewellery and couture, home décor and chandeliers.

This week’s auction contains Lladro figurines, oriental vases and crystal ware.

Old timber from HMS Victory to fascinate collectors

An historically important piece of timber from Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson’s flagship at the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar, HMS Victory, will be a major highlight of auctioneer Phillip Caldwell’s first sale for the year from 11am Sunday March 6 at 239 Wickham Road, Moorabbin.

The piece, made of solid oak, is the port side knee brace for a cathead, used as part of the anchor mechanism.

It was one of the timbers replaced during significant ship repairs about 10 years ago in time for the Trafalgar 200 celebrations and released to help pay for the work.

Leonard Joel will auction the Dr George Wilcox collection from 1pm Sunday March 8 at the Intercontinental Sydney Double Bay 33 Cross Street, Double Bay in Sydney as part of its Jewels and Objets D’Art sale.

The late doctor was a connoisseur of fine clocks, furniture, silver and decorative arts - particularly of English origin. 

Dr Wilcox shared the collecting bug with his wife Pam – so much so that George always bought the antiques while his wife exclaimed, “George, you can’t afford that!”.

The first pieces of a substantial collection of Austrian Swarovski crystal will be auctioned from 9.30am Friday March 6 at Young’s Auctions 229 Camberwell Road, East Hawthorn – with the remainder being offered in coming weeks.

Headquartered in Wattens Austria, the company was established in 1892 by Czech-born Daniel Swarovski (formerly Swartz) who died in 1956.

His father was a glasscutter who owned a small glass factory where the young Swarovski served an apprenticeship and became skilled in the art.
